On Our Way to ESEA!
The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee approved a bi-partisan bill to rewrite the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) that includes Promise Neighborhoods.
From Senator Harkin’s initial press release:
The Promise Neighborhoods Act, modeled on the successful Harlem Children’s Zone, would authorize competitive grants to support neighborhood-based, cradle-to-career “continuums of care” for children in distressed neighborhoods across the country.
While we’re making progress creating a permanent home for Promise Neighborhoods in ESEA, we’re also working hard to attain the current Senate appropriations markup of $60 million for the Promise Neighborhoods initiative in FY 2012. Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyoming
We’re so grateful to Senators Tom Harkin and Mike Enzi for sponsoring this bi-partisan bill, and to Sen. Franken for helping to defend the inclusion of Promise Neighborhoods. Read EdWeek’s run-down of the bill and approval process!
This bill will now head to the Senate floor where we hope to see broad support for this crucial program.
Stay tuned for updates and ways to get involved!
